This Week in Bisbee Person of the Week!

Marsha Cassel moved to Bisbee with her husband Mitch, two dogs, and three cats about half a year ago. She has family who built a house off grid. Mitch was retiring and he said “Let’s change our lives and sell everything and move to Bisbee.” And that’s what they did. Immediately, they have integrated themselves in the community, both of them have radio shows on KBRP. “I’m very excited to be growing my food again, getting chickens,” she said. Catch Martha’s show Tuesdays noon – 1 pm or Fridays 8 am – 9 am. Tell her you saw her in TWIB!

This Week in Bisbee Person of the Week!

Carey Tilghman has been in and out of Bisbee since 1990; she moved back permanently in 2013, as it was time to leave the “big fancy life and be small again.” She has been working at B-Active Bisbee as a tour guide and staff person since 2021. She worked in the building when it was Gloria’s Gemstones and Jewelry, and when the new store opened, she knocked on the door, asking for a job. Her favorite thing about Bisbee is its small town character. “I like being able to walk through my neighborhood and wave at my neighbors.” Tell her you saw her in TWIB!

Candidate forum for Mayor and Council at Boys & Girls Club June 12, 4 – 6 pm 405 Arizona St.

Community radio station KBRP will host the four candidates for mayor on Monday, June 22, 5:30-7:30 at Sweet Hall at St. Johns, two days before early voting begins. Laura Swan of the Bisbee Observer, Matt Hickman of the Herald Review, and Shar Poirer of KBRP will be asking questions of the candidates. Mike Thornton, host of KBRP weekly magazine will moderate. Frank Tornoe has been in Bisbee for 14 years. He and his wife Naomi were running marathons in Phoenix. They were staying at a B & B in Sahuarita, and they asked if there was anything to do in the area, and the innkeeper asked if they had been to Bisbee. They came down and were instantly mesmerized by the town. Hearing that there was a dearth of bass players, the pair decided to move. Frank has played in many bands over the years and is currently the bassist for One Ghost and has his own ambient music project, Andante. His favorite thing about Bisbee? “Community. It really is something else.” Tell him you saw him in TWIB!

Keith Allen Dennis has been in Bisbee since Day of the Dead 2007. He had never seen Bisbee before and got a job in their land use planning department. When I came here, I was like “Oh my God, this is the place.” Keith honed his songwriting skills at open mics at the Stock Exchange and met future bandmates as well as his wife in Bisbee and has thrived ever since. His favorite thing about Bisbee is what he calls its “Magical Mediocrity.” “You don’t have to go to Carnegie Hall but you have to be really authentic.” Tell him you saw him in TWIB.

This Week in Bisbee Person of the Week!

Steve Peavey had been coming to Bisbee since 2004, playing some gigs here with a character named Fiddle Jake. After about 20 years in Nashville as a professional musician, Steve moved here in 2023. He still tours regularly with a wide variety of bands (most recently Dwight Yoakam), and when he’s in town plays fiddle, guitar, and pedal steel with the Mule Mountain Trio. His favorite thing about Bisbee is the respect for artists and musicians. “I always remember it that way, even when I was here a long time ago.” Tell him you saw him in TWIB.

Steve Yoder has been in Bisbee 10 1/2 years; he moved here with his wife after living on a sailboat in Mexico for 5. They were attracted to the fact that it was “a little Blue island in a big Red state” and the price of housing (at the time) was incredibly cheap. He quickly fell in with the radio station and has a popular weekly show called Mule Mountain Mashup Saturday mornings on KBRP. His favorite thing about Bisbee? “I love there’s always something to do.” Tell him you saw him in TWIB!

Have some personal papers you want to see shredded? Old tax info, credit card and bank statements, medical records? Bring them to the Shed-It/Shred-It event on Saturday, May 9 from 9am to noon at the Ace parking lot on Naco Highway. This is a regular fundraiser for the Bisbee Community Chorus. The suggested $10 per box donation pays for the cost of getting the shredding truck to Bisbee, with the remainder of the donation supporting Chorus expenses. Volunteers will unload for you and also accept eyeglasses for recycling and samples of toothpaste and toiletries to pass on the local shelters. Sorry – no electronics or meds.

This Week in Bisbee Person of the Week!

Ed Smith had been coming to Bisbee since the 1970s. But in 1990 he had a very vivid dream where he was living here and knew everyone. He was in El Paso at the time, and took that as an omen. He came to town, bought a house up 100 steps on Tombstone Canyon sight unseen for $10,000 with a $500 down payment, and the rest is history. Ed was responsible for the creation of the Shady Dell trailer park and now owns the building with the Bisbee Seance Room. An avid collector, his favorite things about Bisbee are the architecture and the people. Tell him you saw him in TWIB!

Join your friends and neighbors for an afternoon of three-part harmony as the Bisbee Community Chorus presents its spring concert. The Chorus sings classic choral pieces, a folk song, a Broadway tune, and several pop songs from the 70s. Concerts will feature award-winning flutist Alannah Murphy and the debut of the Bisbee Community Band. Two performances: Sunday, April 26 and again on Sunday, May 3. Concert hall is at 24 Howell Ave., in Old Bisbee, just up the street from the Copper Queen Hotel. Show time is 3 pm both days, and tickets are $15, with kids and teens free.

THE GREAT CHILI FORUM – Thursday, April 23, 2026 6-8 pm Meet and hear from Bisbee’s Mayoral and City Council Candidates Enjoy great chili (meat and veg) with condiments, sides, and cookies only $10 per person for chili and forum cash bar The Gay 90’s Club in Naco, Arizona

Join your friends and neighbors for an afternoon of three-part harmony as the Bisbee Community Chorus presents its spring concert. The Chorus sings classic choral pieces, a folk song, a Broadway tune, and several pop songs from the 70s. Concerts will feature award-winning flutist Alannah Murphy and the debut of the Bisbee Community Band. Two performances: Sunday, April 26 and again on Sunday, May 3. Concert hall is at 24 Howell Ave., in Old Bisbee, just up the street from the Copper Queen Hotel. Show time is 3 pm both days, and tickets are $15, with kids and teens free.

Bridge club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Senior Center 10 am. We are always looking for new members. Beginners welcome. Lessons given.

Meet & Greet for Mayoral Candidate Amy Burkhert 4pm Poco Market

Join your friends and neighbors for an afternoon of three-part harmony as the Bisbee Community Chorus presents its spring concert. The Chorus sings classic choral pieces, a folk song, a Broadway tune, and several pop songs from the 70s. Concerts will feature award-winning flutist Alannah Murphy and the debut of the Bisbee Community Band. Two performances: Sunday, April 26 and again on Sunday, May 3. Concert hall is at 24 Howell Ave., in Old Bisbee, just up the street from the Copper Queen Hotel. Show time is 3 pm both days, and tickets are $15, with kids and teens free.

The Bisbee Woman’s Club is accepting applications for its 2026 grant awards until Friday, April 10. Grants awards will be up to $1,000. Grant applications are posted on its website www.bisbeewomansclub.com in Its Grants section. The grants are intended for organizations and individuals whose project will benefit the Bisbee community. The projects will fulfil the mission of the Bisbee Woman’s Club to further education, improve skills, expand rights and meet the needs of our community. Leah Berard became a full-time Bisbonean in November 2025. She came here in Janauary 2024 as a tourist, and had never heard of Bisbee. “Within 5 minutes, I was like ‘this is my thing,'” she said. She is a regular contributor to the Bisbee Observer and is here with her cat Onyx that she regularly walks around town on a leash. This Week in Bisbee Person of the Week!

Sam Panther has been in Bisbee since 2000, after a depressing three-year stint in Los Angeles. He originally grew up near New Hope, PA, home of Ween, one of his favorite bands. His family was already living here and knew he was struggling in LA, so he got a call from his uncle Buzz to play drums, and the rest is history. Sam is one of the most sought-after drummers in Bisbee and an all-around swell guy. His favorite thing about Bisbee is the people and the community. “It’s all fans and artists, as it should be.” Tell him you saw him in TWIB.

Before Bisbee became a bustling mining camp, it was a haven for Native Americans for centuries. However, their presence brought the intrusion of army scouts and prospectors into the Mule Mountains. The coincidental discovery of vast mineral wealth at the future site of Bisbee permanently affixed the fate of the land forever. Rising from the remote desert was a dynamic mining city, a city that grew into one of the most influential communities in the West. Bisbee was unique in the Old West because of the mixed moral values. Scott Williams has been coming to Bisbee for 25 years, ever since his mother moved here. Most of the year he lives in New York, where he teaches at the Pratt Institute and regularly shows his art. His work is done exclusively from observation and executed on site. That’s why you may see his vintage blue Volkswagen Bug parked by the side of the road and his easel set up to capture a Bisbee scene. “The fact that it’s the same weather almost every day during this period is really helpful to what I do.” Tell him you saw him in TWIB!

Bill Stoller was born and raised in Bisbee. He began playing music when he was twelve. He tried rock ‘n roll but quickly switched to jazz, and has been there ever since. The Bisbee Community Chorus is inviting singers to join in learning parts and practicing songs with others, then performing for the community. The Chorus is a friendly, non-auditioned community group, a Bisbee tradition for almost 40 years. The spring season opens on Tuesday, January 13 at 6pm with introductions, warmup, and a casual first practice at the Presbyterian annex, 24 Howell Ave. in Old Bisbee. Open recruitment runs through February 10, so come any Tuesday evening to meet others and start singing.

Bridge club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Senior Center 10 am. We are always looking for new members. Beginners welcome. Lessons given.

LADIES’ NIGHT CLOTHING EXCHANGE Wednesdays at St Elmo. Come in and trade your old clothes or just pick something out for a donation. Donations will be given to the woman’s shelter in Bisbee.

She came to Bisbee because her mother dared her to visit a “weird-ass little town at the bottom of Arizona.” Jennica’s maiden name is Sheets—yes, that’s why she changed it. She works full-time from home and hopes to start an awesome women’s crochet/women’s club—a group of bad-ass women who support and inspire one another. She loves the genuine people you find in Bisbee, as well as the spirit of honesty that runs through the town.

Bridge club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Senior Center 10 am. We are always looking for new members. Beginners welcome. Lessons given.

LADIES’ NIGHT CLOTHING EXCHANGE Wednesdays at St Elmo. Come in and trade your old clothes or just pick something out for a donation. Donations will be given to the woman’s shelter in Bisbee.

This Week in Bisbee Person of the Week!

Growing up in Chino Valley, Arizona, Noah Smith always knew he wanted to settle in a small town. When he moved to Bisbee two years ago, his musical goals seemed to fall into place naturally. His band Worlds Clyde, is now preparing to release their debut album, “Clyde,” in early 2026. Noah is also the host of the No Way Inn on KBRP Thursdays at 1pm. Tell Noah you saw him in TWIB!
