The Bisbee Massacre with David Grassé
Saturday, March 16, 2024, 11:00 am
Sponsored by the Arizona Historical Society
In December 1883, five itinerant cowboys attempted to rob Castaneda’s mercantile in Bisbee. In the process, these men killed four people. It took the authorities a month to catch them, a month to convict them, and a month to hang them. However, a sixth man was indicted, tried, and subsequently lynched. He very likely had nothing to do with the robbery. This man was John Heath and he was as much a victim as the four people shot down on the streets of Bisbee. Born in Casa Grande, David Grassé is a third-generation Arizonian, raised in Tucson. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History and a Master’s Degree in Library Sciences. Grassé has three published books, “A Killer is What They Needed: The True, Untold Story of Commodore Perry Owens,” “The Bisbee Massacre: Robbery, Murder and Retribution in the Arizona Territory, 1883–1884,” and “The True Story of Notorious Arizona Outlaw Augustine Chacón.” His fourth book, “From the Footlights to the Tenderloin: The Tragic Life of Actress Edna Loftus” is due out in June. He is a member of Western Writers of America and The Arizona Historical Society. Grassé is employed as a librarian because writing Arizona history does not pay the bills. This online program is free, but space is limited. To register, visit https://bit.ly/BisbeeOnline03162024

This Week in Bisbee Person of the Week!

Juliana Marie Thomas is the lovely voice behind Mahavia and Locomundi, two of Bisbee’s most popular acts. She also designs her own clothing. When she’s not performing, she’s often out dancing – here she is cutting the “rug” at the recent Sweet N Juicy concert at the Thirsty Lizard. Tell her you saw her in TWIB!
